A Star is Born
Last week marked a milestone for our team here at Aeterna Labs as we proudly witnessed the successful doctoral defence of Arezoo Hatefi, one of our industrial Ph.D. students. Arezoo's achievement not only signifies the culmination of years of hard work and dedication but also highlights the fruitful collaboration between academia and industry that lies at the core of our mission at Aeterna AI.
Her research, conducted in collaboration with Företagsforskarskolan vid Umeå Universitet and supervised by a team of professionals including Frank Drewes, Xuan-Son Vu, and Aeterna's CTO Johanna Björklund has delved deep into the realm of deep learning for news topic identification.
In her dissertation titled "Deep Learning for News Topic Identification in Limited Supervision and Unsupervised Settings," Arezoo explored innovative approaches to categorising news articles into topics of varying granularity, addressing the challenges posed by the dynamic nature of news content and the scarcity of labelled datasets. Her work not only pushes the boundaries of current methodologies but also offers practical applications in areas such as contextual advertising, news monitoring, and event-based topic discovery.
